RUN TALK RUN – Running mental health support

Hey reader. I’m Jess Robson and I am super duper excited to be a part of the JO&GYM community.

By way of introducing myself swiftly to avoid you falling asleep… I am a mental health advocate, and my BIG THING in life is to help people support others and themselves through the medium of running.

I’ve battled in periodic phases of bulimia, anxiety and depression since the age of 14. Running became an outlet for me (and my negative mind-set of “must stay skinny”) at the age of 19… but actually, it gave me back

  • My identity
  • My esteem
  • My resilience (that was lurking in there somewhere)

My most recent episode of depression in the summer of 2017 was the kickstarter for seeking my own support – because, quite frankly, professional therapy wasn’t doing anything for me.

I think we place a lot of emphasis on therapy and anti-depressants being the only way for us to move forward, but that simply is not the case.

And so, Run Talk Run was born.

Run Talk Run is essentially a mental health support community. We meet for weekly 5km jogs (in locations worldwide) as a means to provide that support for our peers and facilitate a safe space to talk about our mental health. The run leaders are encouraged to remind people that it is a safe and confidential environment to use the run as however is needed, and then set off for a gentle all-ability-welcoming 5km jog. The basic premise, is to make both running and mental health support more accessible (and less intimidating).

There is no set criteria to attend a Run Talk Run. We are for ALL abilities of runner, and we are for ALL ends of the mental health spectrum.

  • You could be an experienced runner just here for the social element
  • You could be a TOTALLY new runner who needs to walk most of the route
  • You could be in the throes of a dark place and not want to talk much at all
  • You could be in a good mental health bubble, but need a way to maintain that

We are here for anyone and everyone, no matter where they are at on their journey.

You do not have to be fit enough, fast enough, confident enough or chatty enough to attend a Run Talk Run.

We are FREE to attend, and always will be. There is no need to RSVP either or sign up anywhere… just turn up!

All of our runs are listed on – if there isn’t a run in your area, then I am always willing to hear from Run Leader volunteers who would love to donate their legs and ears once a week to lead a run.

If you have any questions, please do drop me a line.

This is such a great idea! I need to sign up to this! I think we could all use a bit of a chat and run from time to time.
